Guest Musician: Drums

If you’re ever tapping your foot during a Plays On Word performance, chances are Randy “Smooth” Yelton is the reason why. Known for his easygoing style and impeccable rhythm, Randy brings both heart and humor to the stage (and yes, the nickname Smooth fits him perfectly). Music has always been more than a hobby for Randy—it’s a family affair. Some of his favorite memories involve playing alongside his loved ones and close friends, and he still treasures the time he marched in the New York St. Patrick’s Day Parade and found himself drumming live on TV as a kid. When he’s not behind the drum kit, you might find him enjoying a Dayton Flyers basketball game (he still dreams of the day they win a National Championship), traveling with his wife Nancy to places like St. Thomas, or quietly spinning a vinyl on his vintage 1960 record player. And if Earth, Wind & Fire or Average White Band comes on, don’t be surprised if he sneaks in a dance or two. Randy’s life motto? “I’m just a nobody trying to tell everybody all about somebody (Jesus) who saved my soul.” And if you ask him his greatest achievement, it isn’t the music—it’s never missing a single sporting event for his boys, from little league to church softball, all while working full-time. Family man. Faithful friend. Smooth drummer. And above all, a follower of Christ. That’s Randy Yelton.

About Me

"What first drew me to Plays On Word was Ted and Katie’s faithful commitment to spreading the Gospel with the talents God has given them. Watching them answerthe call to travel the world and share the Good News was inspiring—and I knew I wanted to be a part of that. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of seeing the hand of God bless this ministry in countless ways, and I’m thankful beyond words to be part of the journey. It’s not just about playing the drums—it’s about being part of something bigger: helping lives be touched, hearts be opened, and souls be pointed to Christ.”

Randy Yelton began his musical journey at the University of Dayton in Ohio before returning to New Jersey, where he married the love of his life, Nancy. Together, they were blessed with two sons, Ryan and Richie, a daughter-in-law, Nicole, and two grandchildren, Luke and Cooper.

In 1983, Randy accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior—a decision that transformed his life and set the course for his ministry in music. Soon after, he became the drummer for the Christian R&B Jazz group Straight Street, where he has faithfully served for over 30 years.

Throughout his career, Randy has been honored to share the stage with a wide variety of artists, including Phil Keaggy, The Rascals, Bernie Worrell of Parliament Funkadelic, musicians from Hillsong, and Dave DePietro along with members of the band TT Quick. He also played at one of the Billy Graham Pastor’s Conferences, an experience he treasures deeply. Among his fondest memories is a weekend retreat with Michael W. Smith and his family, where he connected with other Christian artists who shared his passion for faith and music.

One of Randy’s favorite projects was recording on the Plays On Word Music: Volume 1 album, a milestone that holds a special place in his heart. Through every performance, his prayer remains the same: to be used for God’s glory and to help advance His Kingdom.

Final Note

“I HAD TO SAY SOMETHING!” – from Plays On Word Theatre’s "PETE" play

For Randy, this line isn’t just a memorable moment from one of Plays On Word’s most impactful productions—it’s a personal conviction. He believes that when God has done so much in your life, staying silent isn’t an option. Sharing the hope of the Gospel through music and testimony has become his way of “saying something.” Every beat he plays, every stage he steps on, is a chance to point others to the saving grace of Jesus Christ. As Randy often reminds those around him, “Music fades, applause ends, but the message of Christ lasts forever.”
